Conde Nast Readers Choose Thailand

Thailand has once again scored high among readers of the New York-based Cond? Nast Traveler magazine, however readers of the publication’s UK edition don’t appear to be as impressed as their counterparts ‘across the pond’.
In the US edition, Bangkok was voted the top city in Asia and Phuket was voted the top island in Asia. The Four Seasons Chiang Mai was voted as the third best resort in Asia.
Locations for the top island category were judged in six different areas: activities on the island, its beaches, friendliness of the island’s residents, accommodation, and restaurants and shopping amenities. Nearly 28,000 travellers participated in the 2005 survey.
The magazine compared the current situation in New Orleans to that which Phuket faced nearly a year ago: “New Orleans can find hope in Thailand’s remarkable recovery. With five resorts (all in Phuket) in the top 15 Asian resorts category, there is proof that these beautiful regions are fully rebounding after last year’s tsunami.”
Meanwhile, in the UK edition, voting categories were not divided into continents, so Thailand was competing with the entire world.
Thailand came in second, behind New Zealand, as the top holiday destination, while Phuket was voted the tenth favourite island in the world (Bali came in at number one). Meanwhile, Bangkok was voted seventeenth favourite city in the world.
But Thailand continues to shine in the eyes of UK spa-lovers, with the Oriental Spa at the Oriental in Bangkok ranked the number one hotel spa abroad and Hua Hin’s Chiva-Som International Health Resort voted the second best destination spa in the world, after the Ananda Spa in the Himalayas, India.
