Gen Pichitr hails impact of 'Contender Asia' : On February 6th , 2008
After just three weeks on the air, Privy Councillor Gen Pichitr Kullavanijaya has hailed The Contender Asia as a major force which has increased the popularity of Muay Thai across the region as well as introducing it to a whole new generation of fans.
The Privy Councillor lavished praise on the show yesterday at a press conference to promote the fourth episode, which will be screened tonight and features former Lumpini Stadium champion Yodsaenklai Fairtex.
''This is a real milestone for the sport as it will be broadcast in 50 countries,'' said the Privy Councillor.
''It is a chance for people to see the traditions that have been passed over from generation to generation in Thailand.
''I hope that the success of this series means more will be made in the future.''
Yodsaenklai was one of 16 fighters selected to compete at the start of the programme, which features an elimination bout each week until an eventual winner is found.
Naruepol Fairtex is the only other Thai in the competition and he won his first fight in the opening episode.Tonight's episode of The Contender Asia will be screened on TrueVisions' AXN channel (channel 25) at 9pm.
