Muay Thai Training Boxing Gyms in Thailand:

Convict puts on the gloves : On November 7, 2005

Thailand will host the first world title fight in prison today and it will also be the first women's world title contest the kingdom will stage.

The fight is to be held at the Youth Prison Arena, at Rangsit Klong 6 Pathum Thani between Thai inmate Nongmai Sor Siriporn and Japanese Nanako Kikushi.

Nongmai, who is serving six years for drugs offences, will be fighting for the vacant WBC strawweight title at 4pm.

Nongmai had been due to face American Carina Moreno until she pulled out due to illness.

Nongmai has fought five times, won four and lost one but has had 15 Muay Thai fights, winning 10, three via knockouts, and losing five.

Nanako, who is known as the Little Big Girl, has fought seven times with five victories, a draw and a loss.

While those statistics reveal the novice status of this contest, the important issue surrounding the fight is the fact a Thai inmate has been given the chance to turn around her life with help from the Corrections Department.

Medical Correctional Institution director Dr John Lerwitworapong hailed the plan as outstanding and hoped many more inmates would follow Nongmai Sor Siriporn's example.

Men's prisons have long had kickboxing schools, and authorities last year started similar programs for women.
