New role for Tony Jaa : On Mar 16, 2005 The Culture Ministry has made Tony Jaa, the celebrated martial-arts movie actor, a cultural ambassador for cinema, a senior official said yesterday. In “Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior”, Tony Jaa, or Panom Yeerum, impressed audiences around the world with his muay-Thai boxing style. The film has screened in 30 countries so far, said Khunying Dhipavadee Meksawan, permanent secretary at the Culture Ministry. “The movie also helps Thai martial arts declare itself to the world,” she said, adding that Panom really deserved to be made a cultural ambassador. Panom said he was proud of the honour bestowed upon him and vowed to do his best to foster the art of Thai boxing. Panom is the first actor to receive the honour. In 2002 the ministry hailed tennis-player Paradorn Srichaphan as a cultural ambassador for sport. |
